DONALD JOHANOS & DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - RACHMANINOFF: SYMPHONIC DANCES / VOCALISE
TITLE
Symphonic Dances for Orchestra, Op. 45
1. Non Allegro
2. Andante con Moto: Tempo di Valse
3. Lento Assai; Allegro Vivace
4.Vocalise for Orchestra, Op. 34, No. 14
Originally recorded in 1967, this recording quickly gained popularity in the US due to its exceptional sound quality. Donald Johanos, with five years of experience conducting the Dallas Symphony, was familiar with the recording venue, the McFarlin Auditorium. The session captured the performance using only four ribbon microphones directly onto a modified tape machine running at 76 cm/sec. The secret to this holistic sound lies in the absence of a mixing console and post-production processing, something that modern productions with thousands of edits and dozens of audio tracks can hardly replicate.
The Analogue Productions reissue was digitally remastered by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studio, employing minimal noise reduction. This approach allows for a warm and airy sonic experience with remarkable stage representation.
