This recording is one of the most sought-after in the Living Stereo series - and rightly so. Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije presents conductor Fritz Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra with tremendous melodies, vivid colors, daring harmonies, and relentless rhythms. Even though Reiner and his musicians had previously made a name for themselves primarily as interpreters of Strauss, with this recording they surpass themselves.
The Prokofief was recorded on March 2, 1957, and the Stravinsky on November 3, 1956, at Chicago Symphony Hall.
