If you were to list the bands that epitomised the powerful, melodic rock of the early 90s, Mr Big would be at the top of the list. Many people still remember the Californian band for their radio-ready ballad classics 'Wild World' and 'To Be With You': However, the band's self-titled debut album from 1989 shows that Mr Big's origins lie in harder sounds and that the musicians really know how to play their instruments with virtuosity. The opener "Addicted To That Rush" comes right out of the gate with full power and technical proficiency, paving the way for a long career.
Eric Martin's rough yet fine voice is particularly evident on the multi-layered ballads 'Had Enough' and 'Big Love', while Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan show the guitarists of the world where it's at. In their genre, Mr Big's musicians are almost unrivalled in their mastery of their instruments; it's a shame so many people pigeonhole them as balladeers. Let the rest convince you! The 180g LP comes in blue vinyl.
