Peter Frampton began his musical life at Bromley Technical School as a classmate of David Bowie, with whom he played Buddy Holly songs during breaks. In 1969, at the age of 18, he formed the band Humble Pie with Steve Marriott. He left them after four studio albums and one live album for a solo career that brought him numerous hit singles and eight platinum awards.
On his solo debut, Wind of Change, Frampton freed himself from hard rock boogie and opened up to more nuanced songwriting and guitar playing. He showed off his own hard rock with tracks like "It's a Plain Shame," "All I Wanna Be (is by your side)" and a cover of the Stones classic "Jumping Jack Flash." Contrast that with the harmonious melodies of the title track or the elegiac "Fig Tree Bay."
Wind of Change" was a promising and stirring debut that launched Frampton's solo career and paved the unstoppable path to superstardom.
Shane Buettner of Intervention Records worked with Universal's archive team for months, scouring archives in the U.S. and U.K. for the best-sounding tapes. Several tape sets, including tape copies from the 1970s, were sent for mastering and evaluated by Buettner and mastering pro Chris Bellman.
The best tapes are 1/2″ security copies from the 1990s A&M security program. They sound sensational, dynamic, detailed and vibrant. Combined with Chris Bellman's work on the mixing console and the superb mastering chain at Bernie Grundman Mastering, this hybrid SACD finally lets you hear what Peter Frampton and his band really put on tape.
